Escape the room 2.0 was an escape room themed project, where a team of five members was locked in a room for sixty minutes, and had to solve clues and riddles in order to escape.
The Youth Career Empowerment Series (YCES) is a monthly workshop and forum series that touches upon personal, academic, career pursuits that inform, engage and empower the youth. The Series was designed to enhance club member’s personal and professional competency by providing programs, resources and services that assist them in gaining the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to fulfill their vocational calling, offering an opportunity to participate in multiple workshops centered on youth career development and engagement.
The inter-house club debate competition was organized for the members to get along and have a little heated fun while they are at it.

The Mid Town Council of Arts is this year’s signature Professional Development initiative, where the Professional Development team created communities within the club based on their areas of interest in the following talents; Music, dance, drama and art.
Pages & Beyond is a Professional Development initiative for ardent readers. This project focuses on the importance of literature for today’s society hence covering the 4th sustainable development goal of ‘Quality education’. This project is about publishing reviews of popular books, a short review of a book is published along with the cover photo and the name of the author on the official Facebook page of the ‘Pages & Beyond’. The Rotaract Club of Colombo Mid Town jointly organized this project along with the Rotaract Clubs of Chunnakam, ICBT, Jaffna Mid Town, Kurunegala, Pamunugama, Peace City Hatton, Ratnapura, University of Colombo Faculty of Arts & University of Jaffna, Engineering of Faculty.
The GOALS workshop offers an innovative approach for incorporating the Sustainable Development Goals into one’s organizational strategy and also involving all parties – in line with the motto “Leave no one behind”. The initiative of the workshop took place on Sunday the 22nd of November via Zoom online platform and conducted by our respective speakers Ms. Sheshadri Kottearachchi, Representer of UN World Food Programme, Mr. Varuna Ponnapperuma, UN Volunteer Sri Lanka, Mr. Roshan Weerasinghe from the Eco Go Beyond Programme, MAS Holdings while the event was moderated by Rtr. Lakshitha Edirisinghe, Undergraduate, Faculty of Law, from the University of Colombo. This project was jointly conducted along with the Rotaract Club of Centennial United to focus on the integration of the goals and its targets into the various projects conducted by Rotaract Clubs.
Having identified that a lot of youngsters today lack the ability to be involved in social conversation due to the lack of knowledge in current affairs and general knowledge. The Mid Town is quiz is conducted as we aim to produce not only leaders but an all-rounder. This is a part of our everyday general meeting. Towards the latter part of the meeting right after the Rotaractors minute. An online quiz is conducted by the Professional Development Director. This involves going to this particular website called Kahoot and logging into the quiz which is hosted by Colombo Mid Town. The quiz consists of basic day-to-day general knowledge and current affairs. With the objective of exposing our members to more information to keep them updated on current affairs once a fortnight (our general meetings).
Public speaking allows us to form connections, influence decisions, and motivate change. Without communication skills, the ability to progress in the working world and in life, itself, would be nearly impossible. Public speaking is one of the most important and most dreaded forms of communication. Having identified that it is one of the most dreadful forms of communication and also public speaking is vital for young leaders. We aim to produce many leaders from the Rotaract Club of Colombo Mid Town hence the project ‘Rotaractor’s Minute’. A project which has been taking place for the past 10 years within the club to encourage members to take part in public speaking. After every meeting, a member is picked to talk about anything they wish to speak which can be informative and entertaining to the crowd. In the absence of a topic, the crowd picks a title or an argument in which the speaker is challenged to speak in. We have been able to spot several talented individuals through this program and encouraged them to open themselves to public speaking.
This is a Professional Development initiative under the Professional Development avenue and it covers the SDG Goal 09 which is ‘Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure’ and also covers the Rotary focus area ‘Economic and community development’. Through this project, the Rotaract Club of Colombo Mid Town partnered up with CareerMe through our very own member Rtr. Anjana Kulasekara who is the founder and CEO of this company. CareerMe is a company that runs career guidance programs which develops individuals’ competencies in self-knowledge, educational and occupational exploration, career planning and help them acquire the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to identify the right career for them to succeed in the 21st-century workplace.
